Why join this safari?

Why Join the Kirstenbosch Photographic Workshop Between June and December?

  1. Peak Bird Activity

    • Between June and December, Kirstenbosch comes alive with Cape sunbirds, malachite sunbirds, and sugarbirds feeding on seasonal blooms.

    • The birds are most active in the cooler winter mornings (June–August) and during the longer summer days (October–December), making this the ideal period to photograph them.

  2. Seasonal Flowers in Bloom

    • June–August: Aloe flowers blaze red and orange, attracting large numbers of sunbirds and offering striking colour contrasts.

    • September–December: Proteas, pincushions, and ericas burst into bloom, filling the gardens with vibrant colours and creating endless opportunities for bird-and-flower interactions.

  3. The Best Light for Photography

    • Winter (June–August) brings clear, crisp light and often dramatic skies — perfect for sharp, detailed shots.

    • By summer (November–December), the golden hours are longer, allowing for glowing images of birds in flight or perched among flowers.

  4. Comfortable Climate

    • Cape Town’s winter days are cooler and often less crowded in the gardens, ideal for slow, focused photography.

    • By December, the warmer summer days bring a festive atmosphere, making it a perfect time to combine photography with a Cape Town holiday.

  5. Exclusive Small-Group Experience

    • With a maximum of six participants and one guide for every three guests, you get individual attention and expert help to anticipate bird behaviour and capture unforgettable moments.
